Week 1: Welcome to the class & Introduction

 

August 30-September 10, 2006

 

September 4, 2006 – Labor Day – College Closed.

 

Familiarize yourself with the structure of the course.  Try to download assignments and ensure you are able to navigate the course site and obtain what you need for each lesson.

 

Reading Assignment:  Read the Introduction Chapter of your Textbook

 

Discussion Questions:

Question 1-1.  So that we all can get to know one another, tell us about yourself.   Include as a minimum your name, your profession, years of experience and training you have received in the hazmat field, incident command structure and communications with Chemtrec, National Response Center or other agencies. Also share any hobbies or other items you would like to share with the class.

Week 2: Hazardous Materials Regulations, Definitions, Statistics & Hazardous Materials Properties & Hazards

Reading Assignment:  Read Chapters 1 & 2 in your Textbook.

 

Discussion Questions:

Question 2-1.  What would you communicate to a person that was describing an odor of a hazmat to you and why?

Week 3:  Hazardous Materials Identification  

 

September 18-24, 2006

 

Reading Assignment: Read Chapter 3 in your Textbook.  Make sure you read the Sample Scenarios in your Textbook.

 

Discussion Question:

Question 3-1.  Obtain three (3) different Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s) for the chemical Benzene.  Compare the differences of the formats and amount of information contained in the MSDS’s.

 

E-mail Assignments:

Assignment 3-1.  From the 2000 Emergency Response Guidebook using the chemical phosphorus trichloride, list what you would consider the five (5) most important aspects of the chemical that responding units would need to know.

 

Assignment 3-2.  (Due at the end of week #7. This assignment can be e-mailed or faxed.)

Using a map of your area and the 2000 Emergency Response Guidebook, mark the protective action distance on the map that a small, nighttime spill of Sarin (GB) would affect.  Estimate the number of persons affected in that area.  Wind direction from the North.

 

 

Week 4:  EXAM 1

 

September 25-October 01, 2006

 

Exam 1 will address all instruction provided during weeks 1-3.  The exam will consist of twenty (20) multiple choice questions and one discussion question.  Students may use any available resource.  Exams are due back to the instructor by 5 p.m. (CST) on the 1st.

 

 

Week 5: Hazardous Materials Identification, Continued

 

October 02-08, 2006

 

E-mail Assignment:

Assignment 5-1.  List the nine (9) UN classes of hazardous materials and any divisions in a class. Describe the placard markings of colors, symbols and UN number of each class including divisions.

 

Assignment 5-2.  Research the Standard Transportation Commodity Code number and explain its use.

 

Discussion Question:

Question 5-1.  Discuss the difference between a subsidiary placard and a regular placard.

 

Question 5-2.  Discuss the pros and cons of the “Dangerous” placard.

 

Question 5-3.  Discuss how container shapes help identify hazardous materials.

 

 

 

 

 

Week 6: Incident Management Elements

 

October 09-15, 2006

 

Reading Assignment:  Read Chapter 4 from the Textbook

 

Discussion Questions:

Question 6-1. Discuss the sequence of events that occur in the General Emergency Behavior Model (GEBMO).

 

Question 6-2.  Discuss the effects of weather, gravity, and topography has on a hazmat release.

 

E-mail Assignment:

Assignment 6-1.  Box diagram the structure of an Incident Command System down to the smallest unit, labeling all boxes and showing how unified command works in the Incident Commanders position.

 

 

Week 7:  MIDTERM

 

October 16-22, 2006

 

REMINDER:  E-mail Assignment 3-2 Due at the end of this week.

 

The midterm will address all instruction provided during weeks 1-6.  The exam will consist of multiple choice, true/false and discussion questions.  Students will be allowed two (2) hours to complete the exam and course materials may not be used to answer the questions.

 

Midterm exams are due back to the instructor by 5:00 p.m. CST on the 22nd.

 

 

Week 8: Incident Management Elements, Continued

 

October 23-29, 2006

 

E-mail Assignment:

Assignment 8-1.  List the agencies that may have to be contacted to isolate a hazmat incident.

 

Discussion Questions:

Question 8-1.  Discuss the information that could be needed on a prepared list of questions the telecommunicator would ask a caller concerning a hazmat incident.

 

Question 8-2.  Discuss the necessity for only one agency being the contact point with Chemtrec and how the information from Chemtrec would be disseminated.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Week 9: Strategic Goals & Tactical Objectives

Assignment 9-1.  Discuss three aspects of why Isolation is important.

 

 

Week 10: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

 

November 06-12, 2006

 

Reading Assignment:  Read Chapter 6 from the Textbook

 

E-mail Assignment:

Assignment 10-1.  List the major components of Levels “A”, “B”, “C”, and “D” protective clothing, what each level is used for, the differences of each level and why structural fire fighting clothing is not considered chemical protective clothing.

 

EXAM 2

 

Exam 2 will address all instruction provided during weeks 8-10.  The exam will consist of twenty (20) multiple choice questions and one discussion question.  Students may use any available resource. Exams are due back to the instructor by 5 p.m. (CST) on the 12th.

 

 

Week 11: Contamination and Decontamination

 

November 13-19, 2006

 

Reading Assignment:  Read Chapter 7 from the Textbook

 

E-mail Assignment:

Assignment 11-1.  List the business resources that a telecommunicator may have to contact to obtain additional decontamination supplies for responders on the scene.

 

Assignment 11-2. List the local, state and federal agencies where additional information and help could be obtained for a hazmat incident.

 

 

Week 12: Thanksgiving Holiday Week

 

November 20-26, 2006

 

Assignment:  The instructor will post an assignment on the discussion board this week.  College is closed the later part of the week.

 

 

Week 13: Incident Specific Strategies and Tactics & Terrorist and Other Criminal Activities

 

November 27-December 03, 2006

 

Reading Assignment:  Read Chapters 8 & 9 from the Textbook

 

Discussion Question: 

Question 13-1:  Who is at risk due to occupational exposure during a biological attack?

 

E-mail Assignment:

Assignment 13-1.  The 2nd of Edition of this Textbook was copyrighted in 1994, this 3rd Edition is copyrighted 2004.  What are three (3) “attacks” that have occurred in the United States due to Terrorist & other Criminal Activities, as  covered in Chapter 9. 

 

 

Week 14: FINAL EXAM

 

December 04-10, 2006

 

The final will address all instruction provided during weeks 8-13.  The exam will consist of multiple choice, true/false and discussion questions.  Students will be allowed two (2) hours to complete the exam and course materials may not be used to answer the questions.

 

Final exams are due back to the instructor by 5:00 p.m. CST on the 10th.
