PST 110C - Introduction to Public Safety and Communications


COURSE DESCRIPTION: The primary objective of this course/semester is to gain a basic understanding of public safety telecommunications. At the end of the 14th chapter, Public Safety Telecommunications, APCO, 6th edition , the student should be able to communicate knowledge (through written exams, and assignments) the following: basic terminology, including, but not limited to....PSAP, GPS, AVL, TTY, ANI, ALI, MSAG, CYMBAL, ESN, PBX, VoIP, ASL, CAD, MDT, etc.

The student should be able to define terms, including but not limited to, Persistent Repetition, Liability, Vicarious Liability, Active Listening, Stress, Burnout, Call Handling, Telematics, Echo Procedure, Communications-Impaired, Phase 1, Phase 2, Policy, Procedure, Basic telecommunication elements, confidentiality, vital services, etc.

The goal is for each student to integrate and apply these objectives successfully in their profession and/or use this course as a foundation for future professional/academic purposes.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Internet access and an e-mail account.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS: basic computer skills, and basic typing skills.
This is a three semester hour course and will include four written examinations, up to three written assignments, and bi-weekly Discussion Board assignments.
